Chapter 16

Chris and my dad proceeded to tell me exactly what had happened while I was still recovering.

Eric came to the hospital and immediately wanted Chris thrown out again. When the hospital refused like they did when I was originally brought in from the accident, he lost his mind and shoved Chris into a nearby nurses cart. Chris then punched him which he returned, right around then is when Mr Bob showed up with my dad, Paul. Both dads grabbed a man to try and separate them. Hospital security came and Dr. Voss having remembered my previous wishes Dr. Voss instructed security to remove Eric from the floor but was willing to let him stay in a separate waiting room until the baby was born and he could have seen her if he wanted. What Eric wanted however was to pummel Chris. He managed to break away from security and lunged back at Chris knocking him to the floor.

In the middle of all the chaos and fighting Hope suddenly appeared trying to console Eric. That didn't go over well at all. Unbeknownst to us they have been at odds ever since Eric found out about how much money I had from my mom. He's been ignoring her for awhile, trying to put all the blame of our marriage ending on Hope now. When the police showed up Eric was arrested and is being charged with assault and resisting arrest, Hope followed him to the police station and no one has heard from either of them since.

"What confuses me the most about it all is how did she know we were all here? I thought Eric told her when I saw her walk up but he was just as surprised and even pissed that she was there. He didn't tell her what had happened to you." Chris finishes.

"Has your mom heard from her at all?"

"No one has." He said. I can't help but feel a little bad for her. I mean I'm not calling to try and hug it out but she clearly thought she found something with my husband that isn't there. So much has happened to both of us and if things were different we would have been each other's first phone calls. It hurts, as mad as I am at her it still hurts.

The rest of the day goes by uneventfully, I facetime the boys around dinner and get the biggest hug from my dad before he leaves. Chris fixes a bed out of a reclining chair they brought for him right next me and I fall asleep holding his hand.

The next day Ms Racheal arrives after breakfast with arms full of bags and a face full of smiles. I can't help but smile back at her as she rushes to me. She kisses my face all over and makes me laugh. I'm so glad that I still have her going through this.

"I walked by the NICU on my way up to see our girl. Larkin, she's breathtaking, I've never seen a more beautiful baby." Ms Racheal gushes at me.

"Thank you," I beam back. "I can't wait to go see her in a little bit".

"I brought things!" She says while dumping a bag out on my bed,

"I know you didn't get to pack her a bag before you came so I have some clothes options for her to go home in and for you as well." Looking at everything she collected for me brings tears to my eyes, I start sorting through the options she has and I select a little onesie with purple butterflies on it, a matching purple head cap and little pink socks with ruffles. She also has a soft pastel pink blanket with tiny gold stars on the border that the boys picked out for her while they were shopping yesterday.

"They want to make sure she knows it's from them since they can't meet her yet" Ms Racheal tells me. I bury my face in the blanket and sob, I have so many emotions ripping through my system right now. I can't wait until I have all my babies together. As Ms Racheal starts rubbing my back soothingly Chris gets a phone call and moves over to the window to talk. He turns to look at us as he finishes up, then pursing his lips together walks back over to my bed.

“That was the detective from your car accident, he wanted to give us a heads up that Eric was bailed out this morning. They just released him."

"Who bailed him out? Did they say?" His moms asks.

"It was Hope."

"Really?" Ms Racheal asked, looking worried.

"Have you talked to her at all?" I asked them both. They both shook their heads no.

"We haven't heard from Hope since the dinner she stormed out of a couple weeks ago, where we told her we were done paying for the attorneys." Ms Racheal says sadly.

"I've called her everyday since but she's cut us out, I've only heard about Eric ending their affair through one of her friends I bumped into. She said she's been drinking more and acting erratically, did you know she got a new car? Already wrecked it too, she told me."

"She already had an accident in it?" Chris repeats tilting his head to the side.

"That's what her friend said"

"What color is her new car?" Chris asks his mom while looking at me. I finally put together what he's getting at. He thinks Hope ran me off the road.

"You don't think she would do that..." I started but he cut me off.

"We both wouldn't have thought she was capable of a lot of things just a short time ago, how well can we really say we know her right now, she's not acting like herself at all. Mom, can you find out what color the new car is? Can you ask her friend if she's seen it?"

"Let me check her Facebook, hold on." She starts scrolling through her phone while Chris gets on his phone to call the detective back. I can't believe we are considering it, but I have to agree that I don't feel like I know her right now, not really. Deep down I still love her too much to think that she is capable of this yet. That she would try to physically harm me and the baby like that. We both almost died the other day because of that accident.

"Ok, I found a picture!" Ms Racheal s almost yells. "It's red."

All the air leaves my body, something behind me starts beeping and both turn to look at me. Still on the phone Chris quickly crosses the room to me and starts stroking my head.

"Hello Detective Summers? This is Chris Smith, listen can you come down to Larkin's hospital room? We have some new information about her case. Ok  thank you." He hangs up and lets out a breath, "he's on his way."

Thirty minutes later Detective Summers is sitting next to my bed listening to what we found out this morning. If he's as surprised as I was he's doing a great job of hiding it.

"You said when the altercation happened with Eric in the hall, she showed up but none of you all contacted her?" Is the only question he asks after Chris finishes explaining his theory.

"That's correct."

"Ok I need to see about the hospital's security cameras and I need to make a few calls please excuse me." He says stepping into the hall. As he exits the room a nurse comes in with a wheel chair.

"Are you ready for a baby visit?" She asks me, smiling.

"That sounds perfect right about now" I answer her looking over to Chris.

"Why don't you and my mom go up to see her and I'll wait here to see what Detective Summers wants to do next," he says, kissing me softly. Ms Racheal looks over to me with hopeful eyes.

"Bring the blanket," I smile at her,

"We have to tell her how her brothers picked it just for her." She happily grabs it out of the bag and follows me out the door.

Once in the NICU I place the blanket around Vivienne gently and whisper to her all about the little boys at home who can't wait to hold her and meet her. Ms Racheal takes a couple pictures of me with her and a few of just her in her blanket to show Connor and Noah later. We stayed for an hour but eventually had to make our way back. I kiss my hand and place it on her incubator.

"I'll see you later sweet girl " I whisper into the hole I hold her hand through before I'm wheeled away from her and back upstairs.
