When I regained consciousness I was in the back of an ambulance in front of my house. Detective Summers was standing at the door of the rig talking to Andre. My front yard and home were swarming with police officers and Chris was yelling at one of them in our driveway. I sat up immediately and removed the few wires the paramedics had already connected to me, much to their protests. Climbing out of the back of the ambulance Chris noticed me and ran over.
"Are you ok!?" He demanded, holding my face in his hands. Sobbing, I shook my head.
"She's gone! Vivienne's gone!” I choked out grabbing the front of his shirt with shaking hands. He pulled me aggressively into a tight hug and it took everything I had not to completely fall apart, I had to help find her!
“Larkin I know this is hard but I need you to tell me everything that happened before you texted Andre to come and check the house.” Summers says to me I recount my morning as best as I can, relaying the weird feeling I told Chris about, everything I did all the way up to hearing the first thump that made me get Andre.
“What we have put together so far is that whoever it was came in through Noah's bedroom window by climbing the tree right outside. That was the first noise you heard. You said you checked her then and she was fine, I think they were still hiding in his room at that time. Once they had her they could clearly see from the window when Andre walked by and timed it so they crawled out right as he walked back in. Whoever it was made their way away while you were upstairs checking the second noise you both heard.” He says to me.
My knees buckle and give out but before I can hit the ground Chris catches me. I continue to cry into his shirt, I want my baby. Every cell in my body is screaming at me to go look for her but I have no clue where to start.
"What do we do?" I ask him pleadingly. He begins to tell me what they have already started doing when Ms Racheal pulls up with my dad. She hadn't even put the car in park when he jumped out of the car and started sprinting over to me and Chris.
"We came as soon as we heard! What's happening?” He asked, with her not far behind him.
"Bob went with the other cop to get the boys from school, he didn't want them to be scared." She tells me, hugging me. Thank God for them both. Shortly after, a patrol car rolls up with Chris' dad Mr Bob, Connor, and Noah. Office Mike was driving and he clasps Chris's shoulder when he walks up to us.
"What do we know?” He asks us all. Summers gives everyone the breakdown quickly again and we head inside the house where an impromptu command center is taking up my kitchen island. There are cops all over the tree that was used in the entry and escape looking for any clues as to who may have been here.
It's been a few hours now since she was taken and I have barely been able to breathe the entire time.
"Why don't Bob and I take the boys up to your room to watch a movie if that's ok with you?" Ms Racheal pulled me aside to ask.
"Yeah that's a good idea thank you." She starts moving the boys up stairs. They are both confused and upset about everything going on, understandably so. I decide to go with them when Noah starts to cry. We make our way into the master bedroom and I cover both kids in my throw blanket from the bottom of the bed. Grabbing the remote I pulled up Finding Nemo for them and waited a few moments at the door, watching them comfort each other. Ms Racheal and Mr Bob settled into the easy chairs we set up next to our big picture window.
“Let me know if they need anything." I say turning to her.
"Don't worry about us, we'll be ok up here," she says, giving me as reassuring a smile as she can muster. I nod sadly back and turn to go back down stairs.
It's dinner time, the sun is starting to set and Vivienne hasn't eaten since before her down to nap this morning. I know she's hungry and she's still so small she was a premie for christ sake!
Chris waits for me at the bottom of the stairs. His eyes are blood shot and he looks like he's been awake for days already, but in reality she's only been gone a few hours. Reaching out for my hand he leads me away from the kitchen and into our living room. He sits on the couch and pulls me into his lap so I'm straddling him. He wraps his arms around my waist and pulls me so his face is in my neck. I tighten my arms around his neck and cry softly.
"It's going to be ok, they'll find her." He says without looking up.
"What if they don't?” I cry harder
"Chris, I don't think I can live without her."
“You won't have to, no matter how long it takes I promise we will get her back." He says into my chest. I want to believe him, more than anything I want to feel sure that she will be home soon with us where she belongs.
Suddenly there is commotion in the kitchen, both Chris and I look up and turn in that direction. Desperate for any news, we make our way into the kitchen as an officer on the phone calls over Summers waving his arm in the air excitedly.
"It's the surveillance team assigned to Eric Anders! They said he just ran out of his house and sped away, they are having a hard time following him!'
“Send a team to their location and put a call out on his vehicle! Give me that phone!” Detective Summers yells at the room. Immediately they all scramble.
“What can we do?” Chris asks him as he makes his way out the door.
"I need you to stay here, we don't know what Eric knows or what is happening at the moment and it's safer for you here. We will update you as soon as we can." He says trying to move past us.
"You can't expect me to wait behind if there is a chance she's where he's going, she needs to eat! She needs me!” I yell at him. I already heading to the door, like hell I'm sitting here!
"Larkin!" He yells back, "Think of Connor and Noah, stay here where it's safe. If we find her soon she will need you and you need to be ok.” He says firmly but quieter. I nod with tears streaming down my face and he leaves the house. Chris wraps me in a hug as I start to sob again.
30 minutes go by, 45 minutes, an hour, I'm losing my mind. The police that stayed behind with us aren’t telling me anything. All our parents are now in the living room watching me pace back and forth. Suddenly a phone rings in the kitchen, I stop my pacing just so I can listen better. The police officer who answered is not saying a lot, mostly agreeing with what is being said on the other end.
"We'll head out there now." He says and hangs up. Turning around he smiles at us.
"We got her.”
